"Giving a Second Chance for Work: Strategies for Justice Involved Hiring"

ABOUT THE EVENT: About the Event: This is part of our bi-monthly Member Meeting Networking and Learning Series.  The purpose of the meeting is to welcome new and returning members, provide updates on SHRM Portage County activities, and listen to a speaker presentation on an HR topic of interest to our membership.

For this event, participants can learn and earn 1 SHRM PDC.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION: The current labor market is complicated. Turnover rates—and associated costs—are high, and it’s an ongoing challenge to fill open positions and maintain productivity. It’s costly too with employers spending an average of $10,000 per employee in turnover-related costs.

In today's presentation, our speaker will discuss a pioneering initiative by Kelly Services called the Kelly 33 Second Chances Program. This program connects job seekers with a non-violent criminal history with employers seeking talent. The program is part of Kelly's Equity@Work initiative and aims to create a fair opportunity for individuals with a criminal background to access work.

    Topics to be discussed include:

    • Addressing barriers to prevent people from having equitable access to meaningful work
    • 3 things you need to know when setting up a program like Kelly 33 Second Chance
    • 5 steps to get started
    • Ways we can put an end to discriminatory hiring practices

    ABOUT THE PRESENTER:

Keilon Ratliff leads at the intersection of strategy, inclusion, and enterprise growth.  As President of Kelly’s Office of the Presidents Accounts and the company’s Chief Diversity Officer, Keilon is responsible as the executive leader of Kelly’s largest and most complex client partnerships— multi-region accounts that demand high-level coordination, long-term vision, and real operational results. He brings together teams, systems, and strategies to deliver workforce solutions that work in the real world.

His approach to leadership is simple: stay close to the people doing the work, challenge the assumptions that hold them back, and build partnerships that make space for talent others often overlook.  Over his 25+ year career with Kelly, Keilon has done just that. He helped scale Equity@Work, removing outdated hiring practices that disproportionately impacted underrepresented job seekers. He was instrumental in launching Kelly 33, connecting companies with candidates who deserve a second chance. And he’s led business units across finance, energy, and manufacturing— delivering consistent growth while building trust with teams and clients alike.

Keilon holds an MBA from Ohio Dominican University, a degree in Psychology and Human Resources from Westminster College (PA), and a Six Sigma Green Belt. He’s a two-time DEI Influencer honoree from Staffing Industry Analysts and an advisory council member for the Responsible Business Initiative for Justice.
